How the day goes

Close the counter, move the data, check the totals, open the counter.

The migration tool moves the old system’s data — patients, bills, ledgers, stock, reports — into the new one on the same box, and the arithmetic is verified before staff are let back in. There is no double entry period and no “we’ll bring the history over later.”

Do we lose our history?
No. Patients, bills, ledgers, stock and reports are moved from the old database into the new system, in place. The totals are checked against the old system before anyone starts working on the new one.
How long are we actually down?
The last measured switch-overs were 6 minutes and 1 second (Comfort Unit-2, 22,918 rows) and 4 minutes and 6 seconds (Samakal). The data move itself took seventeen seconds at Comfort Unit-2; the rest is bringing the new system up and checking it.
Our database is very large.
The largest move so far was Paradise, at 1.22 million rows. Size changes how long the copy takes, not whether it works.
What do our staff have to do?
Go home on one system and come in on the other. Logins are created in advance; the layouts are shown to the counter and lab staff before the day; someone from us is on the line during the switch.
What if something is wrong afterwards?
The old database is kept. A specific figure that does not match is checked against it. Nothing is deleted on switch-over day.
